Ben Lamp — Matthew McCormick Studio

A design object becomes a piece of care, memory, and connection.

Overview

The Ben Lamp began as a story of family. Inspired by the playfulness of his son stacking stones, Matthew McCormick designed the lamp in the likeness of his wife during pregnancy. We created a short film and storybook that allowed narrative and object to move together. Our film presented the lamp as a portrait of meaning thru form.

What We Made

+ Film and photography blending storytelling and product portraiture

Approach

The film unfolded with the rhythm of a bedtime story. We worked with soft light, tactile framing, and moments of pause. Ben, the designer’s son, acted out the story as his father read aloud.

Outcomes

+ Humanized the lamp through a living narrative

+ Expanded the studio’s design vocabulary through story

+ Strengthened collaboration through shared sensitivity
